Good to know about quartzite

Natural stone: sandstone turned to quartz crystal under heat and pressure. It looks like marble and wears more like granite.

Know this first It is natural stone, so it is sealed when fitted and about once a year, and the veining varies from slab to slab. Some stones sold as quartzite are softer and closer to marble: we tell you which kind a slab is before you choose it.

• The look of marble, harder. Quartzite carries long marble-like veining but is one of the hardest natural worktop stones, so knives and pans mark it far less.
• Takes the heat. There is no resin in it, so a hot pan does not scorch it the way it can scorch engineered quartz.
• Every slab is its own. It is quarried, not made, so the slab you choose is the one that is cut for your kitchen.

Looking after it. Sealed on fitting and about yearly, spills wiped rather than left, and a board for cutting.
